Of course we understand that every
individual have their own preference and there are many beautiful plants out
there making almost impossible to list all of them. Many plants have some
similarities despite belonging to a different family. Our selection was based
in many years of experience dealing with all kinds of tropical plants. Many
of the plants listed below are well known, very often you can find their pictures
in magazines and calendars, you may even have some of them growing in your

SINGLE FLOWERS
1. Orchidaceae : Phalaenopsis sp.
The individual flower of a Phalaenopsis orchid is perhaps the
most beautiful flower in the world. Everything in the flower is outstanding.
The soft contour lines, the pastel colors and shades, even the amazing details
around their reproductive structures is spectacular.
2. Nymphaeaceae: Nymphea coerulea
Several plants produce similar flowers. Even plants from different
families (ex. Cactacea & Epiphyllum.)
These flowers when open are round, symmetrical and have many colorful petals
and sepals.
3. Iridaceae : Neomarica caerulea, Dietes vegata
4. Strelitziaceae : Strelitzia reginae , Bird
of Paradise
Perhaps Heliconiaceae can also be included in this group due

TREES
Fabaceaea
1. (Caesalpiniaceae):
Denolix regia:
Also known as Royal Poinciana or Flamboyant. For many is considered
to be the most beautiful flowering tree in the World. During the early summer
some trees are just about totally cover with orange/red flowers. It is almost
like the entire tree is "on fire".
Colvillea racemosa, is a close
relative that should be considered.
2. (Papilionaceae):
Butea monosperma
Erythrinas
should be included in this group.
3. Bignoniaceae : Tabebuia chrysotricha
Many flowering trees in this family deserve a place in this spot,
including Jacarandas, Spathodea,
Tecoma
and other Tabebuias.
4. Malvaceae (formerly Bombaceae) : Psedobombax
ellipticum
This tree besides producing one of the most beautiful single
flowers in the world is also a magnificent flowering tree when in full bloom.
Also in the same group, Ceiba speciosa,
should be mentioned.
5. Melastomaceae : Tibouchina granulosa

1. Nyctaginaceae : Bougainvillea
Despite its thorns and rusticity, the beauty of a large Bougainvillea
in full bloom is unmatchable.

STRANGE PLANTS
1. Amorphophallus titanum:
This is probably the craziest wackiest plant in the World. When
mature the plant sprouts a huge inflorescence and emits such a foul smell that
is hard for people to get close. On top of it, the inflorescence generates heat
which combined with the odor attract flies in hopes of pollination.

SHRUBS
1. Rubiaceae : Ixora sp
Ixoras are perhaps the most used shrub in tropical landscapes
around the
World and for a good reason. They are easy to grow, flower a lot and spectacular
when in full bloom. Despite been overused it can be considered the best looking
shrub in the world.
Also in the same group we should mention Gardenias
and Mussendas.
2. Apocynaceas : Frangipanis; Plumeria sp.
Large family with many beautiful plants including Adeniums,
Allamandas, Pachypodiums,
& Tabermontanas.
3. Fabaceae - Mimosaceae : Powder-Puffs; Calliandra
haematocephalla
4. Acanthaceas: Pachystachys lutea
Also in the same group Aphelandras,
Justicias, Ruellias
& Thunbergia.
5. Solanaceas: Brunfelsia pauciflora
Also in this group Brugmansias, Solandras,
& Solanums.

1. Orchidaceae : Orchids
Orchids are with no doubt the most beautiful and one of the most
desirable potted plants in the World. Most of the plants without the flowers
are actually not very attractive, on the other hand when in bloom they are hard
to resist.

3. Begoniaceae: Begonia coccinea
4. Apocynaceae : Adenium obesum
5. Gesneriads : (Aeschynanthus radicans)
